Why USA Cannot Recommend Fayyad for UN Position

Salaam Fayyad
Former Prime Minister of Palestinian Authority 2007-2013

In February,  Ambassador Nikki Haley made it clear to people that she was blocking the appointment of any senior role of former Palestinian Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad to a United Nations post.  This was not  because he happened to be a Palestinian.

Salam Fayyad is a Palestinian politician and former Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority and Finance Minister. He was Finance Minister from June 2002 to November 2005 and from March 2007 to May 2012.

Fayyad has a PhD in economics, which he received from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a student of William Barnett.Fayyad was popular in the West and in Israel for his reform of the financial system within the Palestinian Authority, his moderate attitude and his loyal cooperation with Israel. He has been much less popular among the Palestinians, precisely for his collaboration with Israel. He has condemned violence against Israel as detrimental to Palestinian national aspirations, stated that Palestinian refugees could be resettled not in Israel but in a future Palestinian state, and suggested that this state would offer citizenship to Jews.

He doesn't seem to be the run of the mill Palestinian.  "On 29 June 2011, in contravention of the Palestinian Authority's official position, and that of president Mahmoud Abbas, Fayyad expressed skepticism about its approach to the United Nations for a vote on statehood, saying it would be only a symbolic victory.  Even in religion he differs with his peers.  In 2007, Fayyad was quoted by Forbes:"It's the responsibility of men of religion to ... present religion as a way of tolerance, not as a cover for bloodshed."

Nikki Haley
USA Ambassador to UN
This former governor is the 2nd governor of Indian parentage to become a governor.
Her Sikh family named her Nimrata Randhaw.  Nikki in Indian means "little one"
How American can you get?  It's not who you are, it's what you do that counts.  The
PA needs to improve a lot before Nikki and the USA can accept  one of the PA's own in such a position.

The reason Nikki Haley is blocking his appointment is because the US does not recognize Palestine as an independent state.  She explained, “If we don’t recognize Palestine as a state, we needed to acknowledge also that we could not sit there and put a Palestinian forward until the US changed its determination on that front,” she said.  This would " send a signal to the United Nations,” where the Palestinians do not have full membership, and that would be false.  The US is not in support of them being an independent state at this time.

Why is that?  I would say that it's because the PA has not lived up to the expectations the US has for their behavior.  They back terrorists that are killing Israelis, for one.  They pay off terrorists for terrorizing.  "Haley too has vowed to back Israel at the UN, calling on the world body to stop its bias. She’s said that there was now a new era at the UN and that “the days of Israel bashing are over.”  People forget that the PA leaders were once Fatah terrorists themselves.  They haven't changed their goals yet of driving out the Jews from their state and taking it over.  They had never even thought of needing a state of their own until after the 1967 War with Israel when they saw that Israel  seemed to be a permanent fixture that their pals could not drive out with their huge armies.  Then they cried out "homeless" and needed the land as their state.

I might add that Salaam Fayyad seems to be a good guy. In fact, he's unique amongst his peers.   He's stuck with a group of Palestinians  that are not.  The PA have not been following him but are out on a limb by themselves while intertwining with Hamas, who are the worst of terrorists.  When they come around to see how wrong they have been and take on his attitude, then it will be a different world.
